A few nights ago I touched down in Dubai, a city which is a stirring alchemy of profound traditions and ambitious futuristic vision. Its a fascinating mix of energy, optimism and openness towards people from all over the world - a place that's constantly in flux . Above is a choreographed dancing fountain spectacularly set in the middle of a giant lake against the backdrop of the glittering Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. Water cascades down and surges as high as 150m, all synced to stirring soundtracks from classical, Arabic and world music!

Behind me is the world's highest observation platform - the Burj Khalifa is a ground-breaking feat of architecture and engineering, with two observation decks on the 124th and 148th floors and a restaurant-bar on the 122nd. The world’s tallest building pierces the sky at 828m (seven times the height of Big Ben! )

So picture perfect it's ridiculous! It's hard not to admire Dubai for her indefatigable verve, gutsy ambition and ability to dream up and realise projects that elsewhere would never get off the drawing board. This is a superlative-craving society that has birthed the world's tallest building, an island shaped like a palm tree, a huge indoor ski paradise, the world's fastest roller coaster and – soon to come – starchitect-designed art museums of international stature.

With many more grand projects in the pipeline for World Expo 2020, visiting here often feels like a trip to the future – a city firmly in charge of writing it's own narrative. After dark, Dubai is a shape-shifting party spectrum offering for just about every taste from flashy dance temples, sleek rooftop terraces and sizzling beach clubs to fancy cocktail caverns and concerts under the stars !!
